Dubstep pioneer Benga is set to release a new double pack EP on Tempa.

Benga and fellow Croydonite Skream basically changed the face of dance music while still at school, taking the early dubstep sound of Horsepower Productions et al and injecting it with the energy of grime and hardcore. As dubstep got bigger, the pair’s status grew with it, and you can now find them double-teaming at festivals all over the world.

They also arguably made dubstep’s two biggest tunes to date: Skream’s ‘Midnight Request Line’ and Benga’s ‘Night’, a collaboration with Coki. Neither have really managed to conquer the album format in many’s opinion however, long players Diary of an Afro Warrior (Benga) and Skream! (er, Skream) both featuring a lot of quality but not really coming together as revolutionary listens on par with some of their singles.

Skream has another album due this year, and we believe Benga has one in the pipeline. His next release though, is a six-track double vinyl EP for Tempa, featuring the following tracks.

A – Baltimore Clap
B1 – eyeTunes
B2 – Mini Moto Cross
C – 808
D1 – Your Band (Descending)
D2 – Rock Music

If you thought Benga was going to be toning it down, you’re mistaken, these tracks are hard. ‘Baltimore Clap’, a staple in Benga’s recent DJ sets, is very simple; big hand claps and toms summoning a razor-edged, serpentine bassline, but it’s hypnotic beyond its basic structure. ‘808’ is the EP’s real highlight on first listen though, an ultra-percussive track that comes like the hyperactive hatechild of Untold’s ‘Flexible’ and DVA’s ‘Natty’.

We’re not sure on the release date of this year, but more details when we get it. Until then you can listen to ‘Descending’ and ‘Baltimore Clap’ on Benga’s myspace.

Update: The EP is titled Phaze One, and will be followed by Phaze Two in the lead-up to the album. It’s Benga’s take on the Skreamizm series, and will be released on April 19.
