The latest limited 12″ from New York’s FRKWYS features remixes of Psychic Ills by Juan Atkins, Gibby Haynes and Hans-Joachim Irmler.

Freak-rock trio Psychic Ills offer up three tracks for reinterpretation, all taken from their Din and Mirror Eye albums, which were released in 2005 and 2008 respectively on The Social Registry (the label that brought us Telepathe, Zs and Mike Bones among others).

Detroit techno architect Juan Atkins, whose Model 500 project makes its long-awaited return to releasing music this year, reimagines ‘Mantis’ as a streamlined noir groover, its chilly FX counterpointed with a warm, insistent analogue bassline.

Hans-Joachim Irmler, founder member of recently dissolved krautrock legends Faust, takes on ‘Witchcraft Breaker’, creating a murky but expansive industrial mood-piece replete with atavistic drum sounds and speaker-scything drones. Last but not least, Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers reminds us of the vast cornucopia of ideas that have informed his band over the years, turning out a pulsating cosmic techno jam – heavy on the phasing – that Juan himself would doubtless approve of.

The FRKWYS series was founded by the RVNG Intl. label to bring seemingly disparate but musically consonant artists together for one-off remixes and collaborations. The first FRKWYS (Vol.2) release saw Excepter remixed by their forebears JG Thirlwell and Chris & Cosey, while earlier this year FRKWYS brought out Vol.3, an album-length collaboration between ARP and Henry Cow member (and all-round avant-pop legend) Anthony Moore.

FRKWYS Vol.4 is limited to 550 copies housed in thick black jackets with a two-colour adhesive wrap; 50 subscriber copies come in leatherette jackets. The tracks will also be available digitally. More information and pre-orders here.
