The Streets’ new and reportedly final album is released next month.
UK funky top boy Lil Silva – the man responsible for such evergreen dancefloor wreckers as ‘Seasons’ and ‘Pulse vs Flex’ – has been drafted into remix lead single ‘Going Through Hell’, and it’s a bolshy interpretation for sure. Driven by hoovering vamps somewhere between early 90s Belgian rave and MMM, about two minutes in it drops into a kind of choppy techno-not-techno groove, Mike Skinner’s vocals about fight in the dog hacked up and looped into abstraction, before a trancey, sun-is-rising string breakdown takes charge. The sub-heavy coda sounds like Agent X covering Oizo’s ‘Flatbeat’.
In short, it’s all over the shop, but it’s works, thanks to Silva’s combined mastery of loose-limbed tribal rhythm and razor-sharp editing.
