Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label has long boasted one of the catholic rosters around.
From Thundercat’s virtuosic soul music through to Samiyam’s head-nod through to Austin Peralta’s piano led jazz tracks, the imprint clearly operates under a flexible rubric. Proving the rule is LA-based RYAT, aka singer/producer Christina McGeehan. As Playground report, RYAT will drop Totem in June on the label.
Ryat’s last record was 2011’s Avant Gold, a selection of glossy glitch-pop that placed McGeehan’s voice – elastic, gamine, sometimes processed – front and centre. The RYAT name is a flexible project, sometimes including guitarist Tim Conley and tilting from thick electronica through to more delicate fare. Expect a certain degree of kookiness: the album will feature eleven tracks, all inspired by different types of animal.
Totem will see release on June 5, courtesy of Brainfeeder.
