James Matthew reps small tape label SLF Tapes, and specialises in the sort of crumpled boom-bap matthewdavid has occasionally turned his hand to.

Snuck out at the tail-end of last year (and subsequently brought to our attention by Tiny Mix Tapes), James Matthews’ 1993 is a tape-damaged collection of beat music cobbled together out of shattered fragments of R&B and soul. The results offer granular hip-hop turned on its head and smothered in distortion. On the title track in particular, 1993 offers a brief but effective exercise in controlled obliteration – consider Matthew’s schtick as the negative of Patrice & Friends’ madcap champagne footwork.
