Factory Benelux continues its recent spate of archival activity with the release on February 11 of new CD and deluxe 2xLP editions of Swimming, the 1982 debut album by The Names.
Originally released on Les Disques Du Crépuscule, the album was reissued on CD in 1991 and 2000, but has been unavailable on vinyl since Music-Box’s Greek pressing in 1983. Disregarding 2008’s comeback LP Monsters Next Door, the Belgian band were active between ’79 and ’82, and are best known for their classic single ‘Nightshift’. All of their key work was produced by Martin Hannett and recorded at Manchester’s Strawberry Studios, and Swimming in particular has come to be regarded as a cold wave art-rock classic.
The 2012 editions of the album offer bonus tracks including the ‘Nightshift’ and ‘Calcutta’ singles and the band’s Peel session from February ’82. The vinyl’s gatefold sleeve and the CD’s booklet feature original artwork and poster design by Benoit Hennebert, and photographs by Marc Portée.
