Flying Lotus has revealed details of his forthcoming Cosmogramma LP in an interview with Pitchfork.

Cosmogramma is FlyLo’s third album to date, and his second for Warp Records, following 2008’s well-received Los Angeles. Apparently all the music is finished, and only the artwork and packaging remain to be finalised.

“I think [Cosmogramma‘s] a lot better [than Los Angeles], off the jump,” says the LA-based producer, real name Steven Ellison. “I think it’s just progressing. I’m working with a lot more instruments and a lot more people, a lot of different textures. It’s really becoming this thing that I wanted to do in the beginning. I’m finally getting to the point where I can make the kind of records that I want to make — that I wanted to make when I was younger, things that I dreamed about making.

“It’s this fusion-y kind of thing where all the elements of the music that I love are there. It’s definitely inspired by some of the Alice Coltrane stuff, as well. It’s kind of a dedication to her again. ”

“There’s bass solos and stuff. It’s becoming a little bit more unpredictable, I think. You don’t know where it’s going to end up. It goes 4/4 for a minute, and then transforms into something else.”

Like its predecessor, Cosmogramma does not feature any guest rappers. It does, however, boast contributions from string arranger Miguel-Atwood Ferguson, bassist Thundercat (who has played with Suicidal Tendencies, Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Erykah Badu), plus Laura Darlington and a number of other vocalists who Ellison doesn’t want to name as yet. He’s more forthright in revealing some of the artists he woud like to work with in the future.

“Björk is the next one for me. If I work with Björk, then I’ll be a happy soul, man. And Jay Electronica. That needs to happen this year. I’d really like that. Prince– that’d be kind of fun. I have some beats for Prince, man.”

In the meantime, he’s working on remixes for Massive Attack, Jaga Jazzist and Andreya Triana. Cosmogramma is expected to be released in April; read the full interview with Flying Lotus here.
