Roxy Music have been announced to play on Saturday night at Bestival‘s “year of the fantastic”.
Bryan Ferry’s legendary art-rock troupe, who first formed in 1971, are one of the most influential – and dapper – ever to emerge from Britain, their inspired, proto-post-modern clashing of musical and visual styles, codes and signifiers leading the way for so much that has come since, from punk and prog to glam and synth-pop. Expect to hear all the hits from the group when they take to the stage at Bestival 2010: ‘Avalon’, Jealous Guy’, ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘Do The Strand’, ‘More Than This’…christ, the thought of it is making us a little weak at the knees, if truth be told. Visit Bestival’s official site now to get hold of an exclusive 15-minute long ‘Serge Santiago epic-edit’ of Roxy Music’s classic single ‘Angel Eyes’ along with collage artwork specially created by the band.
“The Isle of Wight has a strong festival tradition,” says Ferry, “So it’s great to be coming to Bestival with Roxy Music – it seems a great idea to have fantasy as this year’s theme. I’m also really looking forward to seeing Nile Rodgers and Chic again”.
Many Bestival-goers will more concerned as to what this year’s fancy dress theme is. Well, all has now been revealed, so over to festival mastermind Rob Da Bank to lay it down:
“Roll up roll up tribe of the Bestivalites, descend from your starships, rise out of the seabed, fall from the stars, unleash the Magick and release your imagination into our 2010 world of FANTASY. Open the gates and welcome in Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, The Lord of the Rings, hobbits, trolls, elves, fairies, the Odyssey, King Arthur, Merlin, the Dong with the luminous nose, William Morris, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Willy Wonka, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, Harry Potter, Spirited Away, The Time Machine, Star Wars, the Incredible Hulk, magick, the supernatural, Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Lord Ganesh, Fantasy Island, Caractacus Potts, Tarzan, Veruca Salt, Zombies!”
Ooh er. A raft of further acts have been freshly added to the line-up, including disco legends Chic (onetime collaborators with Roxy Music), skunk-puffing Bristol icon Tricky, dubstep kingpin Skream and his synth-happy junior Joker, the hotly-tipped Egyptian Hip-Hop, an Autonomic showcase starring dBridge, Instra:mental and SP:MC, UK dance perennial Zinc and the American garage god that is Todd Edwards. Erol Alkan, Aeroplane, Mumford & Suns and, er, Cornershop are some of the others who’ve just joined up. Full roll-call below.
Tickets for the festival are on sale now, and, if previous years are anything to judge by, they’re likely to sell out before too long. Click here for more info.
