Grouper – AKA Liz Harris – is one of the most interesting artists in the US underground, and we’re pretty sure her next album, whenever it arrives, will win her a whole host of fans outside outside of it.
Which isn’t to say that she hasn’t already released some amazing records: Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (Type, 2008), Cover The Windows And The Walls (Root Strate, 2007) and Wide (Free Porcupine Society, 2006) are all essential composites of gauzy Animal Collective-style electronics (Panda Bear and pals are big fans of Grouper, incidentally), MBV levels of distortion and a hard-to-define, all-pervading eldritch quality redolent of Sunn O)), Lustmord and Linda Perhacs alike.
We’re pleased to report that Weird Forest Records have re-pressed their special vinyl edition of Wide, a key work in the development of Grouper’s ever more enchanting sound and one of her rawest and most rewarding efforts to date. Boasting slightly modified (and very handsome) artwork, this record is limited to 1000 copies and won’t be around for long; more info here.
This year will also see the publication, through Root Strata, of Divide – a book by Liz Harris. More news on that when we have it.
