There are few people around right now making music as vital as Matt Cutler.
Known to most as Lone, the Nottingham-bred hip-hop producer found a new audience last year with Ecstasy and Friends, his third album and his first for Actress’s Werk Discs label. Full of vibrancy, it was one of the tail-end of 2009’s best full-lengths, but if Lone’s form this year is anything to go by, it merely marked the start.
‘Once in a While’, available on the 12” accompaniment to Kode9’s DJ-Kicks CD and, from what we gather, forthcoming on a Werk Discs 12” with some well-picked remixes, has become one of the year’s most anticipated dubplates, while ‘Pineapple Crush’, the first 10” on Lone’s own Magic Wire label, is maybe even better – a kaleidoscopic rave epic with whooping hip-hop samples and gloriously clipped drums.
We’ve known about this for a while, but Lone recently revealed on Twitter that the next release on Magic Wire will be an eight-track mini-album, titled Emerald Fantasy Tracks and spread across two 12”s. It will be released in November.
For a taste of what to expect from the new album, we’d recommend you head down to Shoreditch’s XOYO on Friday, October 1, where we’re presenting a live set from Lone, alongside DJ sets from Loefah, Ikonika and Pariah. Sound good? We thought so.
