Regular readers of FACT will now how excited we are about the upcoming 2010 edition of the Unsound festival in Krakow, Poland.

Taking place over the period September 17-24, it boasts a carefully curated line-up that finds room for artists as diverse as Emeralds, Laetitia Sadier, Kyle Hall, Joy Orbison, Shackleton and dark ambient progenitor Lustmord. The theme of this year’s festival is “horror: the pleasure of fear and unease”, and it manifests itself not just in the music programme but also in special screenings of obscure slasher flicks and a series of workshops and discussion events curated by Joel Martin.

Joel Martin, as many of you will know, is half of Quiet Village and one of the UK’s most notorious record collectors and enthusiasts. Horror is a particular source of interest; he compiled the 2004 Trunk release of Dawn Of The Dead‘s cues and incidental themes, and worked as background music supervisor on Shaun Of The Dead. At Unsound 2010 he’ll be interviewing the likes of Goblin and (John Carpenter collaborator) Alan Howarth, as well as speaking about the use of library music in exploitation movies.

To whet our appetite for all this, Martin has put together a 40-minute mix, Baptism By Blood, which includes all kinds of outre horror movie music featuring “everything from the trailer to Argento’s ‘Deep Red’, famous horror scores, their lesser known counterparts, as well as horror related afro/reggae and electronica and evil-sounding voices rasping highly evocative words from time to time”.
