Magda [above], first lady of Richie Hawtin’s Minus label and a recent contributor to the Fabric mix CD series, will release her debut album on October 22.
Titled From the Fallen Page, it finds the producer, of Polish descent, honing her punchy brand of techno over ten tracks, though the press release claims that the project originally started as a “post-punk, dark disco set of soundtrack-inspired music.”
Madga’s got competition though – Margaret Dygas, also from Poland, but now based in London, will be releasing How Do You Do on October 25. Dygas has recorded for Perlon in her time, but this album will be released on Japanese label Power Shovel Audio.
According to Resident Advisor, it’s “inspired by Peoplewatching, a guide to body language written by controversial British zoologist Desmond Morris. “Each track is based on different emotions … each relating to a chapter or idea from the book, that come together as one story. Each title is accompanied by a quote, that illuminates the relationship between the music and book.” The package will also come bundled with a 36 page booklet of Dygas’ personal photographs which were captured during the time of producing the album.
New York bedroom producer George Lewis Jr, otherwise known as Twin Shadow, made waves earlier this year with a single on Terrible, the label ran by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. He’s now signed to indie institution 4AD, who will release his debut album Forget, produced by Taylor, on November 15.
In Lewis’s own words, joining the 4AD roster was a bit like this: “Four or five months ago I was watching Lost Highway with a beautiful Swedish girl, we both fell in love with This Mortal Coil’s cover of Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’. I remember thinking, “Man I wish I had seen that band, I wish I had been around at that time, I feel like my record belongs in that family.” …Here I am joining that family, for which I couldn’t be happier’.”
Joe ‘Hot Chip’ Goddard and Raf Daddy will release Curious Nature, a new four-track EP from their 2 Bears project, on October 18 via Southern Fried. It features three original tracks from the pair, which “nod lovingly to Derrick Carter, Larry Heard and Carl Craig”, as well as an cover of Fun Boy Three’s ‘The Lunatics’.
Elsewhere, there’s a new EP from Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Tobacco, and a South African house compliation, Township Funk, which will see Mzo Bullet’s cult ‘Casablanca’ get its first widespread release.
