Alas, FACT mix 303 isn’t the work of an acid house pioneer (DJ Pierre was number 272), but it is someone who’s had a noticeably storming 2011: Bournemouth’s BNJMN.

Formally best known for his role in Singing Statues and his production work as Jack High, Ben Thomas this year signed to untouchable Dutch label Rush Hour, adopting the BNJMN guise for two albums – Plastic World and Black Square.

Plastic World, a smudged trip that at times sounded like Galaxie 500 if they signed for Werk Discs, took most of the plaudits, but Black Square was arguably the more interesting of the two releases, BNJMN stepping out of the shadows a little and revealing himself to be one of the most unique, fascinating artists the UK has produced of late. Away from the albums, he also released ‘Nightvision’, a heavily cinematic, midnight techno jaunt on new label Stolen Kisses.

Much has also been made of BNJMN’s live sets, “a masked, hooded man hunched over his midi controller amid a wash of digital noise” as FACT’s Mr. Beatnick recently put it, but FACT mix 303 is actually a rare DJ set from BNJMN, drawing from the stranger corners of house and techno. There’s no tracklist, but did you really expect one? Fans of Kassem Mosse, Actress and Lukid should be LL VR THS.
