Coming up to their 50th release, Ramp Recordings are more or less part of the London furniture these days.
Fortunately, though, that doesn’t mean they’ve run out of ideas. Over the past couple of years they’ve managed to squirm out of any potential pigeonholes through inaugurating a series of sublabels: there was Pattern, responsible for Breach’s ridiculous 2010 anthem ‘Fatherless’ and, more recently, Fourth Wave, an imprint focussed on tumbledown house music of the kind setting UK dancefloors alight right now.
After three singles from newcomer Gerry Read, the label’s now returning to its first signing with a 12” from Amsterdam resident (and past FACT mix supplier) Presk. These tracks are slightly reminiscent of Pearson Sound’s outings under the Maurice Donovan moniker, but really it’s the common influence that shines through – namely jacking, percussive house of the Chicago variety. ‘Hesitate’ chops around at a leisurely 120bpm with a loose, welcoming swing that belies the name. ‘Kook’ picks things up a little and is altogether more furtive – though that shouldn’t stop necks from snapping on the dancefloor.
