Protect-U have a new EP of modular house music on the way.

The last thing we heard from Aaron Leitko and Mike Petillo was 2011’s ‘World Music’, a tropical – and, all told, twee – piece of tropical house that brought John Talabot to mind. ‘Slow Ultra’, a new jam posted up this morning over at Rose Quartz, is a much more furtive proposition.

The analogue synths on ‘World Music’ were perky and bright; here, they give off a dim glimmer. The percussion is that bit more abrasive, the bassline a touch more unsettling. By incorporating a bit of sangfroid into their sound, Protect-U have produced probably their most compelling material yet.

The duo’s as-yet-untitled EP is due out in April on Vibrations Records.
