‘Trance’, whatever that means these days, seems to be pretty inescapable. It’s on your car radio or parping out of your younger cousin’s Blackberry: euphoric synth pads and pulsing four-to-the-floor rhythms are undoubtedly pop’s current tropes of choice.
In response, Optimo’s J.D. Switch has attempted to disinfect the term by pulling together a mix of what he terms “pure trance”. The set, produced as part of the White Light Mixes series, draws thematic links between Tangerine Dream, Boris, Chris And Cosey and The KLF – and there’s not an Ian Van Dahl cut in sight. The 80 minute mix is accompanied by a micro-manifesto, which speaks for itself:
“I don’t drive but I spend a lot of my life being driven about late at night which can have quite a transcendental effect. I wanted to reclaim the trance word from years of misuse and bad associations and create a mix of what I term pure trance. I knew right from the start the kind of tracks to look out that would evoke the feeling I get late at night, being driven between cities when the conversation has ceased and everyone in the car is lost in their own thoughts, slightly spaced out.”
There’s real variety across the session, but fans of analogue synths and Krautrock rhythms will feel particularly at home. However you feel about Twitch’s counterinsurgency, it’s a pretty compelling call to arms.
