NY music emporium Other Music is branching out with its own label, created in partnership with notable indie imprint Fat Possum
As Pitchfork report, the highly-regarded store will launch the Other Music Recording Co. at the tail-end of April. The first release on the label will come from Brooklyn’s Ex Cops. An Ex Cops LP is set to follow, and releases are also on the cards from Tokyo trio Yura Yura Teikoku.
Mississipi-based Fat Possum will handle distribution for the nascent label. Speaking about the enterprise, store owner Josh Madell said: “The thing about our store is we have a very broad view of what is great music. That is the aesthetic that we want for the label.” Ex Cops’ ‘You Are A Lion, I Am A Lamb’ will drop on April 24.
In other fledgling label news, Dalston’s fabled Cafe OTO is also stepping into the distribution game. As The Wire report, the venue has created its own imprint under the name OtoRoko.
The label will release recordings of selected live performances at the venue. The first OtoRoko release, …The Worse, The Better, will document free-jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann‘s 2010 set alongside Steve Noble and John Edwards. The record is slated to emerge some time this month, and arrives with artwork by Brötzmann himself. Honest Jon’s are set to handle worldwide distribution for the label.
