Singer Jade Pybus, trading under the abbreviated handle Py, has the sort of address book you definitely wouldn’t want to leave on a train.
Her forthcoming Tripping On Wisdom mixtape calls on the talents of many a rising UK dance producer: Lapalux, Breton, Raffertie and iO all contribute instrumentals, over which Py’s crystalline voice is able to soar and shine. ‘Blind’ is a cut from that upcoming collection, and features vibrant Manchester beatmaker Damu on production duty.
‘Blind’ opens with twinkling Timbaland synths, at once bright and brittle. There are plenty of neat touches throughout: synth glissando, neon arpeggios, unexpected rattles, hydraulic hisses. Py’s nursery-rhyme vocals repeat a circling mantra about a lover with “double vision”; if they occasionally fly a tad close to twee, they’re brought down to earth by Damu’s squelchy instrumental. Contrary to the sentiment of the title, there’s plenty that’s eye-opening about ‘Blind’.
Tripping On Wisdom is set to drop on May 21. You can stream and/or download ‘Blind’ below.
