Brainfeeder staple Jennifer Lee, aka TOKiMONSTA, specializes in immersive, oddball beat music.
The RBMA graduate last grabbed attention with 2011’s Creature Dreams, a cinematic and delicately rendered set of trip/hip-hop instrumentals. A brilliant new cut from the artist, titled ‘Fame Boozers Lullaby’, has popped up on her Soundcloud, with the accompanying message: “Freebie! I finished this track with Rucyl (Saturn Never Sleeps) quite a while ago. We both decided this track would be great to share. Enjoy!”
‘Fame Boozers Lullaby’ is woozy, aquatic, burbly – it’s as if TOKiMONSTA’s been transferred on loan to Tri Angle. As per that title, there’s certainly a drunken quality to proceedings, with Rucyl‘s muffled vocal mingling indistinctly with Lee’s woozy hip-hop lope. There’s something enchantingly soporific about the track’s clotted textures and gentle melodic lilt. Readers viewing this on a work computer might be advised to wait until hometime before hitting ‘download’ – this sort of canned bliss isn’t conducive to productivity on a sun-dappled Thursday morning.
