Former Another Level member Dane Bowers has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rape.

According to The Sun, Bowers was detained at Hatfield police station on Tuesday. A 35-year old friend of Bowers has also been arrested on suspicion of rape. In a statement, Hertfordshire police said:  “A 32-year-old man from Surrey presented himself at Hatfield police station by prior arrangement on April 3. The man has been arrested and is assisting police following an allegation of sexual assault.”

The arrests relates to an alleged attack carried out in the early hours of Saturday morning at a hotel. Bowers had previously being DJing at Hertford’s Deco Lounge nightclub. Both men deny the allegations, and have been released on bail. The pair were interviewed by police, and had DNA and fingerprints taken.

Another Level rose to fame in the late 1990s, hitting the No.1 spot with a cover of Silk’s ‘Freak Me’. Bowers was the only member to achieve anything resembling solo success, and hit the Top 5 with collaborations with Victoria Beckham and Truesteppers, though his 2001 album Facing the Crowd was recorded but never released. In 2010, Bowers returned to music and signed with independent label Conehead UK, but his album for the label is yet to see the light of day.

The arrest is not Bowers’ first brush with the law: he was arrested in November 2010 for alleged involvement in the sale of mephedrone at UK-based cage fighting events.
