Following on from last week’s scorched-earth ballad ‘Lustful 97’, Miami gloom-peddlar SpaceGhostPurrp has released another new(ish) track.
‘Bringing Tha Phonk 2012’ is a re-mastered take of a track first circulated midway through last year. The original, groggy and woozy as it is, was shot through with a sense of cloudy-eyed romance. ‘Bringing Tha Phonk 2012’, by contrast, is both crisper and darker.
The rejigged ‘Bringing Tha Phonk’ is brought in line with God Of Black‘s oubliette acoustics. Strange hydraulic wheezes, familiar from ‘Mystical Maze’, swoop and rush in the background. SpaceGhostPurrp’s voice isn’t the most tonally interesting out there, but his halting phrasing is already highly distinctive. In more frivolous hands, SGP’s stop-start flow might come across as sing-song; in these gloomy environs, the effect is mantric, almost occult.
The updated version is set to feature on The Chronicles Of SpaceGhostPurrp, his forthcoming LP for 4AD. The album is due on June 12.
