Terre Thaemlitz, a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles, is an artist that loves to subvert and challenge expectations.
Not just musical expectations in fact: Thaemlitz has, throughout his distinguished career, taken on concepts of gender, individuality and identity, as well as how people perceive and digest records and live performances.
His latest album, Soulnessless, deals with “music and spirituality” [via Resident Advisor], and features a lot more than just a record – in fact, it’s a multi-media package that features over 30 hours of music, video and text. Its agenda is to push “the boundaries of the album format in today’s post-CD era … both an attempt to explore the unprecedented recording lengths offered by the MP3 format (a feature which goes largely unrecognized as a result of its near exclusive use as a format for quick downloads), as well as an act of resistance to online distributorships.” Length is one of the key words here – Soulnessless clocks in at 16GB in size, and is available on a hard drive format (specifically a Class 4 MicroSDHC Card).
Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed that this album was originally announced in late 2010; given its scope and size, however, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s taken this long for Thaemlitz to actually make the thing.
Comatonse will release Soulnessless on May 31, and will be followed by two vinyl EP releases, featuring remixes by DJ Sprinkles and K-S.H.E (another alias Thaemlitz) of material from the album.
