This Saturday, 28 April, sees the return of Commandments to The Alibi on Kingsland Road, London.
Run by residents Mosca and Unknown Soulja, this month’s guests are recent FACT mixer Huxley and Déjà Vu’s resident bashment don Joe Grime [above].
Ahead of the night, we asked Joe to pick the top five dancehall tunes ruling his shows this month, and to tell us a little about each of them – beginning with Mavado’s irresistible ‘Action Pak’.
MAVADO
‘ACTION PAK’ (ACTION PAK RIDDIM)
Joe Grime: “I’ve been waiting for the Daseca production camp to team up with the Gully God, Mavado, for a while now. They were responsible for some of his early hits including ‘Dying’, ‘Dreaming’ and ‘Real Mckoy’ and this tune is definitely up there on those levels. Its been a while since Mavado dropped a tune in this style and with lines like “Mama tell me son I beg you please keep it calmer, I’m getting old and mi cyaan take the drama” this is going to get countless wheels on my show and in the dances!”

‘SEXXX TAPE RIDDIM’
JG: “In a recent interview the team who produced this riddim, Truckback Records, said it was intended solely for the dances and not for radio – but luckily I play after 9 so this can run. It’s pure, 100% undiluted slackness with huge cuts from Natalie Storm, Mr Lexx and my favourite, Lady Saw. This is dancehall at its rawest and I love it!”

POPCAAN
‘SHE WANT HOOD’ (TNS RIDDIM)
JG: “This brand new riddim from ZJ Chrome (producer of ‘Clarks’) falls in line with the current trend towards the old-school dancehall sound. It’s been released in two parts with man of the moment Popcaan voicing my stand-out, ‘She Want Hood’.”

CHAM feat. O
‘TUN UP’
JG: “This tune’s been around for a while now but is still doing it. Cham has been releasing a lot of great music recently and this is another prime example of his return to form. The riddim’s got a very seductive feel to it and with O on the hook, I can see tons of ladies proudly singing along to this.”

KONSHENS
‘STOP SIGN (GYAL A BUBBLE PT.2)’
JG: “Konshens has been the artist to watch in 2012 with a whole bagga big tunes getting heavy rotation. This is part 2 to his huge tune ‘Gyal a Bubble’ and it’s set to be just as big. I love the way Konshens works with the riddim on this, knowing exactly when to attack and when to just sit back and let it breathe.”
Catch Joe Grime at Commandments this Saturday, and tune into his weekly show on Déjà Vu FM, Tuesdays 10pm-midnight. More information and mixes to download here.
