Skream and Kelis working on "UK garage" material together

Skream and Kelis have been working on material together.

It’s a partnership that arguably makes perfect sense, too. Kelis’s last album, Flesh Tone, took a far more dancefloor-orientated direction than her past work; a direction which wasn’t necessarily unwelcome, but would’ve benefited from producers a little more relevant than will.i.am and Benny Benassi.

Likewise, Skream’s work has been getting more poppy with each record (though he still takes time out to release colder, more underground material on labels like Deep Medi and Tempa), and it’s about time he had the chance to work with a vocalist with the gravitas of Kelis.

In an interview with The Tuesday Club, Skream reveals that he’s produced two tracks for Kelis, and is working on another for Last Shadow Puppets’ Miles Kane. The Kelis material is presumably designed for her as-yet-untitled sixth studio album, which is expected to see release this year. It’s already known that one of the Skream and Kelis tracks is titled ‘Distance’, and is, in Skream’s words, a “UK garage record”.

It’s not the first time Kelis and dubstep have been brought together: James Blake famously sampled her 1999 hit ‘Caught Out There’ on his breakthrough single ‘CMYK’.
