Tupac’s Coachella appearance might have been virtual, but it’s impact on the charts has been very tangible indeed.
Billboard Biz report that sales of Tupac albums have zoomed through the roof in the week since Dre and Snoop unveiled their uncanny hologram. Tupac’s posthumous Greatest Hits album, originally released in 1998, re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 129, shifting 4,000 copies. This represents a 571% sales hike, and the first time in 12 years that the album has nudged back into the charts.
There were also big sales raises across Pac’s discography. Sales of All Eyez On Me leapt by 95%, and Me Against The World were up by 53%. Singles ‘Hail Mary’, ‘2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted’ (both featured in the Coachella show), and ‘California Love’ all saw big rises in sales. Holograms, it appears, shift units: don’t be surprised if Adele gets the Pepper’s Ghost treatment before the end of the year.
