When she’s not pumping out idents for iconoclasts, M.I.A. also makes the occasional record.
Maya Arulpragasam’s fourth album Matangi is due late this year. Following on from the rollicking ‘Bad Girls’, M.I.A. has now debuted two new tracks from the record.
Yesterday, M.I.A. tweeted “mannnnnnn , days like this i wanna jus upload the songs right now and go clime the himalays with ikhyd on my back.”. The post pointed towards a video for a new track, titled ‘Come Walk With Me’. It’s a schizoid number, falling somewhere between kuduro and J-Pop. The rhythm tilts between pummelling syncopation and 4/4 thud, and M.I.A.’s vocal is unusually twee and syrupy.
The Stool Pigeon also draw attention to a second clip posted on M.I.A.’s Twitter. It’s only a snip, but bhangra’s clearly the order of the day. Both tracks bring Kala‘s poppy pan-globalism to mind – a contrast to the digital hissy fits of 2010’s / \ / \ / \ Y / \. No release date is scheduled for the new record.
‘Come Walk With Me’ is available below. Click here to hear the second track.
