Following last night’s Ninja Tune event – which featured performances from Thundercat, Floating Points, Offshore and Slugabed – Hidden Depths now turns its attention to another of the UK’s great labels, Hyperdub.
The London-based label, originally started by producer and DJ Kode9 [above] in 2005, now run with help from label manager Marcus Scott, has introduced the world at large to some of electronic music’s most unique talents. The enigmatic Burial, for many, stands top of the pile, but Hyperdub’s about far more than William Bevan: it’s nurtured the likes of Darkstar, Ikonika, King Midas Sound, Cooly G and LV from early points in their careers, while also finding space in its catalogue for transmissions from Rustie, Zomby, Mark Pritchard, Mala, King Britt and more.
Recently, Hyperdub have signed up some of the most promising acts from the US pop underground: Laurel Halo’s debut album, Quarantine, will land on the label later this month, while Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland (formally Hype Williams)’s Black is Beautiful perhaps represents the duo’s best work to date.
Hidden Depths’ Hyperdub showcase will feature four live performances, from UK house pair Scratcha DVA (plus guests) and Cooly G, the inimitable Actress, and an at-this-point unannounced Hyperdub act. Label boss Kode9 will DJ, while Chicago footwork tag-team Spinn & Rashad also stop by for a set. As with yesterday’s Ninja Tune event, in the run-up to the show FACT will be hosting features with the artists involved, plus streaming one act live from the showcase.
Hidden Depths is a collaboration between Tiger Beer, Black Atlantic and FACT, designed to showcase some of the UK’s most unique labels. Hidden Depths’ Hyperdub showcase will take place on June 13 at KOKO; tickets are available here.
