As well as performing at Sónar 2012, minimal techno overlord Richie Hawtin will give a talk at the Barcelona festival.

If you follow the Canadian DJ on Twitter, then you’ll have noticed that while Hawtin DJs, his feed automatically broadcasts what tracks he’s playing. That’s due to a program called Twitter DJ, which was developed by engineer Bryan McDale for Hawtin’s M_nus label, in association with Native Instruments.

The premise behind Twitter DJ is that it brings the DJ closer to his or her audience, and promotes the artists whose tracks are being played – however, there are certainly counter-points worth debating, not least the fact that there’s a long-standing tradition of DJs not wanting dancers – or other DJs – to know what records they’re playing, and there’s plenty of punters who like to keep a bit of mystery to what they’re hearing too. Wonder if Theo Parrish will attend.

Hawtin will be speaking about – and presumably fielding questions on – the project at the Auditori MACBA, from 3pm until 4pm on Saturday June 16. The talk is, however, only available to those who apply for Sónar Pro accreditation.
