For her book Detroit: 138 Square Miles, photographer Julia Reyes Taubman spent seven years documenting what’s left of Detroit.

As most FACT readers will know, Detroit’s legacy doesn’t only relate to cars – the city rose and, dramatically and tragically, fell with the motor industry – but music: as well as contributing heavily to the development of soul, pop and hip-hop, most notably through Motown Records, it’s also commonly perceived as the birthplace of techno music, and remains a mecca for techno fans today. In 138 Square Miles, Taubman explores the “abandoned homes and ballrooms, ruined factories” and more that act as regular reminders of what the city once was, and how far it’s fallen.

138 Square Miles was released in December, but the BBC yesterday posted a video piece on the book, which zones in on individual photos from it with a voice-over by Taubman. It’s definitely worth a watch: check it out here.
