Legendary crooner Scott Walker is currently toiling away in the studio on new material.

Pitchfork report that a new, as-yet untitled song from the reclusive auteur was played at a 4AD event in New York City. Reports from the playback describe the track as labyrinthine, full of twists and turns and, as expected, “unsettling”. An Autumn release date is mooted over at the site.

For the uninitiated, Walker’s career began with sixties vocal trio The Walker Brothers. He also released a clutch of classic self-titled solo LPs throughout the 1960s. From the 1980s onward, Walker reinvented himself as an avant-garde chanteur: 1995′s Tilt and 2006′s The Drift are still some of the most harrowing records released in either decade. Last year, Walker scored an Aletta Collins dance piece at the Royal Opera House in London. News about the forthcoming record has been transmitted in whispers for a while, so it’s great to hear concrete proof that new Walker material is on the way.
