Teengirl Fantasy’s Tracer promises is, in their words, a more “serious or mature” beast compared to 2010’s exuberant 7AM.
Tracer is definitely a more demure set than its predecessor, one which gently inveigles its way into your head rather than shrieking for attention. Delicate album centrepiece ‘End’ is a case in point – a track which invokes Reich as readily as it does rave.
Over a continuous glockenspiel ostinato, Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss layer on ultra-evocative piano stabs and squelchy acid leads. Hunt for a beat, however, and you won’t find one: ‘End’ is a relatively free form composition, one where musical ideas unfurl on their own terms and, where necessary, drift out of view. Teengirl Fantasy’s career is still young, but it looks like they’re already eager to grow up.
Tracer is due on August 21. Laurel Halo, Romanthony and Panda Bear are among the guests.
