Kendrick Lamar examines liquor-drenched hedonism over a sinister T-Minus beat.
On ‘Swimming Pools (Drank),’ all facets of the talented Compton rapper are on display: his rapid-fire, Bone Thugs-flow, a semi-conscious Black Hippy vibe, and an ear for a hook (“Imma show how to turn it up a notch / first you need a swimming pool of liquor / then you dive in”). Canadian producer T-Minus had quite a run last year, with credits on “I’m On One,” “The Motto,” and “HYFR,” and this beat fits right in with his catalog. It’s moody yet theatrical, with the type of melody that has pushed those tracks to number one.
Lamar is prepping the follow-up to his independent smash Section.80. good kid, m.A.A.d. city is out on October 2 via Top Dawg / Aftermath / Interscope Records.
