UK Funky luminaries Funkystepz have a new EP on the boil.
The North London ensemble specialise in spartan UK Funky; their unforgiving percussion arrangements belie their background in grime, but there’s a sense of swing and mischief in their works that keep things from ever getting too aggie. As well as churning out a fair few anthems (‘For U’, ‘Further’), they’ve been great evangelists for all things syncopated on their Rinse FM show. Hyperdub have previously elected to play patron, releasing their breakthrough cut ‘Fuller’ and their playful Trouble EP. As Alex Macpherson’s recent feature showed, they also know their way around a crafty pop edit.
Dirty Fluxx sees the crew on marginally tougher form than on Trouble, trading in that record’s warm textures and soca shuffle for something altogether more mechanical. Bustling knees-ups (‘Star 9’/’Bizarro’) and more experimental riddims (‘Bizzaro’) are both represented. There are some touches of wobble as well, although Funkystepz are still some way from planting their feet on the brostep.
Dirty Fluxx will arrive on August 27, courtesy of Forever Live Young.
