Outsider artist R. Stevie Moore has had a selection of his many, many, many recordings compiled by Charlatans singer Tim Burgess.
Lo Hi Fives, due next month on Burgess’ O Genesis label, is intended as a tenderly assembled primer to the bedroom-pop legend. By way of a taster, ‘Pop Music’, taken from last year’s 2011 Advanced LP, has been released for free download.
So much of Moore’s canon is knowingly self-reflexive, and ‘Pop Music’ is exactly the sort of metatextual gem that makes him such a continually interesting proposition. Structurally, it’s a complex beast, switching up time signatures and darting off in new directions with the curiosity of a fidgety toddler. Moore’s yelp is wistful and wonderful, and when those cheapo synthetic horns come in, ‘Pop Music’ sounds curiously triumphant.
