On ‘Everything is Embarrassing,’ Sky Ferreira plays a lovelorn balladeer with an assist from Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes.
After emerging in 2009, the former “LA lolita” (she’s 20 now) has released a string of singles and EPs. Seemingly operating without the pace and pressure that have plagued similar young singers, Ferreira continues to develop as an artist, like on her recent collaboration with 90s alternative icon Shirley Manson, on the loud-quiet-loud ‘Red Lips.’
On the 80s-indebted pop ballad ‘Everything is Embarrassing,’ Ferreira sets her sights on sounds popular before her birth. The singer enlisted Blood Orange, who helps craft some of the retro-pop that appeared on his recent Coastal Grooves. The song, which she claims doesn’t represent her “new sound (whatever that means),” will appear on her upcoming Ghosts EP.
