Jamie xx, it appears, is set to follow the example of Harry Partch and the Baschet Brothers.
In an interview with The Observer, the producer/percussionist revealed that he’s in the process of developing a new model of sampler. The (as yet hypothetical) instrument is described in the article as “like his beloved MPC sequencer but iPad-like and see-through”. The interface also promises “colourful graphics” that respond to the touch. Sounds not a million miles away from a Tenori-on to us, but its should be fascinating to see what the producer ends up cobbling together; if the discotastic new MASCHINE II is anything to go by, he’s bang on trend.
Jamie xx has recently been working on Alicia Keys’ forthcoming album. The long-awaited new xx record, Coexist, drops on September 11; you can watch a delicate live rendition of lead track ‘Angels’ below.
