Yeasayer, Caribou collaborator Ahmad Gallab aka Sinkane signs with James Murphy's DFA Records

Sudanese-born, New York-based Ahmad Gallab crafts funky dance tracks as Sinkane.

Gallab, who has established himself as a touring multi-instrumentalist for Yeasayer, Caribou, and Of Montreal, is ready to strike out on his own. As Sinkane, he has released but a few songs: the wah-wah soul funk of ‘Runnin’ (remixed expertly by Caribou-side project Daphni) and the mellow groove of ‘Jeeper Creeper,’ remiscent of Yeasayer’s Odd Blood.

Sinkane will release his debut LP Mars on October 23 via James Murphy’s home for dance floor agitators, DFA Records. According to Spin, he has used his industry connections to garner appearances by Twin Shadow, Yeasayer’s Ira Wolf Tuton, Roberto Lange of Helado Negro, Oliver Chapoy (Shai Hulud, Warm Ghost), Afrobeat band Nomo, and Stutzmcgee.

The Sudanese immigrant takes his stage name from a misheard lyric in Kanye West’s “Never Let Me Down.” Instead of Amistad hero Joseph Cinqué, Gallab thought hip-hop poet J. Ivy said “Sinkane.” Stream the ‘Runnin’ single (with remixes) below.
