Late last month, Steven Ellison – better known as Flying Lotus – took to Twitter to tease a forthcoming remix of man-of-the-moment Frank Ocean.
As Pitchfork note, the L.A. beatmaker has now posted the cut online. The remix, cannily titled ‘Binge Eating Without You’, arrived with the disclaimer “since i know ill never finish it…ill just post this ruff draft” – and, it has to be said, it shows.
Ellison’s version is a surprisingly charmless affair. Compared to his other remix work (his Lil Wayne refixes, say), it’s scrappy as hell: some pitch shifting and cosmetic detail aside, it’s not exactly clear what’s being brought to the table. An interesting insight into what a Flying Lotus “ruff draft” looks like, perhaps, but from a producer with a brain as big as Ellison’s, it feels like a pretty meagre offering.
Flying Lotus’ new album Until The Quite Comes arrives on October X via Warp. You can watch the album’s ravishing promo clip here.
