In productivity terms at least, The Fiery Furnaces’ Matthew Friedberger is the closest thing the kooky indie world has to a mixtape rapper.
Since the start of 2011, Friedberger has been knocked out eight separate solo albums as part of a fan-subscription scheme. The Solos series finally crawled to a close in January, and subsequently got the full compilation treatment this summer on the The Diabolical Principle set. Clearly believing there’s no such thing as too much Friedberger, the Illinois singer-songwriter has announced a further new LP – and it’s another quirky proposition.
Pulled together in Paris, Matricidal Sons Of Bitches takes inspiration from the ropey B-movie films produced on Hollywood’s ‘Poverty Row’ in the 1950s. In a somewhat opaque and meandering supplementary blurb, Friedberger suggests that the album is an OST to an imaginary low-spec horror film. The tracklist – and, believe us, it’s quite a tracklist – is below, as is a free download of super-synthetic spoken word cut ‘Ladies-in-Waiting – Waiting Forever I. The Neighbors’.
Matricidal Sons Of Bitches is due on October 29 on Thrill Jockey.
