The UK funky veterans continue to evolve on their latest offering.
While not as prolific as they were during the funky scene’s heyday, the North London production duo has not been totally absent, releasing a single on Hyperdub this year and an EP on Numbers the year prior.
Illusions is the latest offering from the duo. Lead track ‘Omar’ is a metallic return to form, highlighted by (and titled after) a pitchshifted sample of everyone’s favorite character from The Wire (“Come at the king, you best not miss”). The oscillating synthesizers of ‘Tick Tock’ punctuate some breakbeat-fueled funky.
In a sign that Ill Blu is evolving beyond funky, ‘2nd Nature’ finds the duo forgoing their trademark groove for a silky jam rooted in house and garage. It’s an intriguing turn for an act so closely identified with a specific sound. Stream Illusions below; the EP is out via MadTech Records on October 22.
