Documentarians reach first fundraising goal for film about seminal hardcore punk scene.

Salad Days: The Birth of Punk In The Nation’s Capital is a Kickstarted documentary that examines Washington, DC’s 1980s punk scene.

The hardcore scene has had an outsized influence in punk, emo, and DIY-independent music of all kinds, spawning a laundry list of influential bands (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Jawbox et al) and labels (Dischord, Teen Beat).

The film is written and directed by music journalist Scott Crawford. In his teens, Crawford started a fanzine called Metrozine that documented the scene, releasing a 7″ compilation that featured the first recording by a 16 year old drummer named Dave Grohl.

Salad Days features interviews with Grohl, Henry Rollins, Bad Brains’ HR, and standard bearer Ian MacKaye, a name that dominates the development of the DC scene.

The film recently passed its $32,000 fundraising goal, and with 15 days to go, a new goal of $42,000 has been set (they’re currently at $37,200). The filmmakers hope for a Q3 2013 release, with exhibitions in film festivals. Watch a trailer below.
