Major London venue Proud2 has license suspended after stabbings

Proud2, the sizeable club based in London mega-complex The o2, has had its licence temporarily revoked in the wake of a violent incident earlier this month.

Mixmag report that the 3750 capacity club – known as Matter in a past life – will be temporarily closed to the public following a pair of stabbings earlier this month. Two men were stabbed at the venue’s House Of Joy night on September 2. One of the victims was wounded in the back and elbow, and the other was injured on his left arm.

Greenwich council have convened a full licence review hearing to consider the fate of Proud2. The club’s doors will remain closed until the committee has given its ruling, which is expected on October 4. In a statement on their Facebook page, the club’s management wrote: “Proud2 has not gone into administration but we are currently undergoing a review of license and are closed for next 28 days. We expect to open to the public following this period.”

Alex Proud, CEO of Proud, was more candid, complaining to Event that the decision to close the venue was “absurd”: “Huge damage has been done and it wasn’t needed. The concept that a club which has hosted 300,000 people this year and is overwhelmingly safely is now too dangerous to open for the month while we wait for review is simply undemocratic and absurd…I agree with the review as it is only right when something goes wrong. As it happens I think we did all the right things on the night, but the review is healthy and correct.”
