As part of !K7’s ongoing series of birthday giveaways, here’s a free track from Brandt Brauer Frick
Brandt Brauer Frick’s focus on live instrumentation is often frustrating: as with your BADBADNOTGOODs and Bad Pluses, there’s something a shade gimmicky about recreating machine music with fingers and strings. 2011’s perfectly entertaining Mr Machine, released under the auspices of the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, proved the point, never quite finding the equilibrium required to become a bone fide success.
Freebie ‘Schamane’, however, shows the trio’s methodology coming good. The track was cobbled together from a dilapidated piano they found in Berlin, and it’s a textually rich 4/4 number. Prim, yes, but full of the sort of startling local detail that Matthew Herbert’s made his trademark. You can download the track – which comes paired with a Wolf + Lamb/Soul Clap track – below.
