Low-key London rapper DELS swerves into unlikely territory on his new single.

Arriving with 2008’s quirky Lazy EP, DELS dropped a string of EPs on Big Dada to relatively muted fanfare. It took 2001 debut LP GOB to really reel in the fans: production from Chip’s Joe Goddard, Kwes and Micachu, not to mention a guest spot from UK hop-hop grandee Roots Manuva, got DELS some proper attention.

‘You Live In My Head’ is taken from new five-track EP Black Salad, and shows a trip-hop influence seeping into DELS” sound. Ghostpoet’s mumbled melancholia is clearly now a major influence, as is Mezzanine-era Massive Attack. DELS’ eavesdropped-at-train-stations flow isn’t exactly dextrous (“blah, blah, blah, will I see you again?”), but there’s enough everyman charm to prevent things sounding prohibitively half-arsed.  If DELS hasn’t quite won you round yet, ‘You Live In My Head’ might well do the job.

Black Salad will drop on Big Dada on the November 26. An album will follow next year. [via Dummy]
