On Sunday 21 October, Deviation lynchpin and BBC Radio DJ Benji B will host a documentary about much-missed soul/rap icon Gil Scott-Heron.

Recorded as part of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s ‘Gone Too Soon’ series – which has previously cast a spotlight on the likes of Aaliyah, Guru and J Dilla – the documentary features interviews with KRS-One, Chuck D, Shabazz Palaces and Jamie xx. Particularly intriguing is testimony from XL boss Richard Russell, the man behind Scott-Heron’s astonishing late career comeback I’m New Here (not to mention the Jamie xx remix album which followed).

By way of promo for the show, production company Folded Wing have released a lengthy Benji B interview with Russell about Scott-Heron. It’s revealing and passionate stuff, and well worth a listen. The forthcoming show, which will air at  9.00pm, will also feature unheard material from a new posthumous Scott-Heron record, titled Nothing New.
