The controversy-courting artist documents her visual output with a new book.
Out last week, M.I.A. tells Maya Arulpragasam’s story through collages, photos, and prints, beginning with her art school years at Central Saint Martins London through her groundbreaking musical career.
The publisher notes the unorthodox nature of the book: “video stills turned to stencils pieced back together to make animated installations; spray-painted canvasses scanned then made into digital collages; photographs videotaped, then run through bad computer connections to create graphic prints; artwork on nails, walls, prints for T-shirts, handmade stage costumes.”
The book also includes lyrics and an exclusive interview about the personal events and themes that shaped each of her various art and music projects. The next such project is her fourth album, Matangi, which she has described as “Paul Simon on acid.” The album is tentatively due out in December.
