Harlem crackpot Gobby is returning with another deep-fried EP for reliable fringe-squatters UNO NYC.
The producer’s done plenty of behind-the-boards work for outrageous NY breakout act Mykki Blanco, and has been tapped for beats by the likes of Le1f and Cadence Weapon. He also reps New York’s Illuminati click, and has been earning his keep doing the occasional bit of live stickwork for Hype Williams. His new Above Ground LP shares a lot with his blunted companions; like Copeland and Blunt’s recent Black Is Beautiful LP, it’s wreathed in distortion and absolutely reeks of sinsemilla.
If the excerpts below are anything to go by, Above Ground is a diverse set. In contrast to this year’s techno-leaning New Hat EP, it’s an exploratory, freeform collection. ‘H’ is a lithe funk jam fed through a sausage mincer. ‘baliitoob’ meanwhile recalls both Black Dice and the weirder nooks of Madlib’s Beat Konducta series. A broiling, lo-fi gumbo, then, and one not short on charm. [via The Fader]
Above Ground is out today on UNO. The label is sharing it for free today, “while it lasts,” so download it now.
