You know Alan Moore: incorrigible rabble-rouser, professional nutcase, and proper genius.
Moore is probably the UK’s most storied graphic novelist, penning the likes of Watchmen, From Hell and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He is also, of course, the brains behind V For Vendetta, whose iconic antihero V has become a potent symbol for the Occupy movement.
As Pitchfork report, Moore has expressed solidarity with Occupy on a new song. ‘The Decline Of English Murder’ – tellingly released on November 5 – arrives on Occupy’s own Occupation Records imprint, and sees Moore striking out at irresponsible banks and global governments. The track is a dolorous folk ballad, with some lovely lyrical touches (“watching the truck drivers blind their fried eggs with their cutlery”) and a somewhat freewheeling climax. Brown sings, whilst Joe Brown is on musical duty.
‘The Decline Of English Murder’ coincides with campaigning collective Anonymous’ Operation Vendetta , which will see protestors recreating the final scenes of V For Vendetta by marching on the Houses Of Parliament. Those who download the single from the Occupation website will be eligible to win a V mask signed by Moore.
‘The Decline Of English Murder’ is far from Moore’s first musical endeavour. In 2010, Moore released the Unearthing box set, an audiobook featuring instrumental contributions from the likes of Justin Broadrick, Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite, Death Grips’ Zach Hill and Doseone. Last year saw Moore also team up with Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’ Malley to present a live soundtrack to 1962 film Heaven And Earth Magic at Portishead’s All Tomorrows Parties event. Somewhat less successfully, Moore was involved in the genesis of Damon Albarn’s Dr. Dee “folk opera”, although he jumped ship before the project was finished.
