Truss, as his name suggests, deals in rough, constricted techno with a mean streak.
Tom Russell announced himself to the world with 2007’s Forge EP. That disc was an interesting exercise in light and shade: the drums and synths were all Kompakt prettiness, but the brooding low end suggested much darker inclinations. 2010’s Osbaten, released on forceful techno imprint Perc Trax saw Russell on musclier form, and this year’s Ganymede disc was even more stomping and squalid. He’s also regularly collaborated with Brooklyn producer Donor, knocking out brutal techno and sculpted noise releases for Perc Trax and Stroboscopic Artefacts.
FACT have the first airing of Truss’ recent remix of Scottish techno duo Clouds. Taken from forthcoming Turbo EP Tannhauser Acid Works Pt. 1, ‘Those Cracks In Your Face, Do They Hurt?’ is a pretty tough proposition, a pummelling assemblage of rattling chains and battering ram kicks. Truss’ take doesn’t exactly pull many punches either, but, surprise surprise, his remix is positively lithe. What with the syncopated drum programming and stop-start drops, it’s an oddly funky reimagining.
