It’s East-meets-West on this 90s-reminiscent B-side.
Over some hazy boom-bap, Joey Bada$$ and Ab-Soul trade verses in their respective styles, both of which recall the lyricism of Golden Era hip-hop.
Ab-Soul brashly kicks off the song with a boast for the ages (“Jesus Christ and Sean Carter are my only idols / No, Jesus Christ and Sean Carter are my only rivals / I’m the messiah of rap / My catalog’s the Bible”), while Bada$$ continues to rap with a deliberate flow that finds him almost falling into word play and rhythm. The track is also the only one you’ll hear all year with the ignorantly-conscious “keep your motherfuckin’ chakras open” hook.
Stream the song below. Ab-Soul recently appeared with his Black Hippy compatriots on the remix of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’, and Joey Bada$$ put out an old school clip for ‘Fromdatomb$’.
